Meet Carter, Marlyse, Sinae, Rachel, & Tracy (left to right)
CARTER, 22
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in New Westminster, British Columbia and had recently moved to the city of Vancouver three years ago. I love the outdoors (hiking, swimming, anything with some kind of adventure), a big fan of the night-life lifestyle and also find content in staying home, being a home-body. I have many friends who all do a different variety of activities, so my wardrobe has outfits for all occasions; with next to no consistency.
Tell us about your personal style!
My day-to-day style clothing is definitely casual. My style can vary depending on what I am doing but usually if something is comfortable and makes me feel good, I’ll wear it regardless of what it is.
What's your experience with Thrifting?
I have been thrifting since I was younger (in elementary school) with my mother and sister. I have always found the cutest, most unique pieces while thrifting compared to shopping in stores, so I definitely prefer thrift shopping. To this day I still often thrift shop alone or with my best friends.
What's one article of clothing in your closet you cannot live without?
My white high-waisted jean shorts. I found them at a thrift store, believe it or not, and fell in love with them since I rarely find shorts that I feel comfortable in.
Where do you like to shop in Vancouver?
When it comes to regular shopping, I usually find myself at 8th & Main or Urban Outfitters.
Why do you thrift shop?
I thrift shop (and have always thrift shopped) because it’s a huge money saver. I am kind of a shopaholic/like to consistently freshen up my wardrobe and the prices at thrift stores really have regular shopping beat. For the price of one basic shirt that I would buy at a “first-hand” store is the same price I could purchase three pairs of shirts, one button up and a pair of ripped jeans at a thrift store. Since I’m in school full time, it’s harder to afford my usual shopping habits but thrift shopping allows me to find what I’m looking for, usually still in great quality, for less than half the usual price.

Why do you thrift shop?
I love how we live in a world where sustainability and climate change is at the forefront of our minds. While I’m doing my best to contribute to a greener planet by reducing my carbon footprint in all aspects of my life, it makes me feel good knowing that I can also make an impact by choosing to shop secondhand!

RACHEL, 24
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. I lived in Montreal for four years while I completed my BA at McGill! I’m so happy to be back in Vancouver near the ocean and mountains.
Tell us about your personal style!
My personal style is pretty casual, but I want to try and spice up my everyday outfits. My go-to outfit is a comfy sweater, tshirt, jeans, and a pair of black leather booties. I won’t say no to an excuse to dress up though!
What's your experience with Thrifting?
My first thrifting experience was with my mom! She is an avid thrift shopper and can’t say no to a good find. Overall, my experience has been super fun because it’s like a treasure hunt. You never know what you’re going to find. Some of my favourite articles in my closet are thrifted.
One article of clothing in my closet I cannot live without:
I have a belt that I found at the thrift store and ever since then, I haven’t not worn it with my pair of jeans. I used to never wear belts, but this one accessory completes my outfit. Its black leather, with a silver buckle that has the most intricate details. I’m so happy it was my size and was only $6.99!
Where do you like to shop in Vancouver?
I am a super picky shopper. I like a lot of different styles, but when its on me, I have to love it in order to buy it. Some of the stores I love to go to are The Main Exchange, Front & Company, Aritzia, and the Salvation Army Thrift Stores. My wardrobe is a mix of new and second hand!
Why do you thrift shop?
I thrift shop for two main reasons. The first is to shop more consciously with the planet in mind. Recently I have learned the impact of fast fashion on the planet and it is insane! The second reason I thrift shop is to have a unique style. I love having pieces that no one else may have. I also like thrift shopping because it is affordable.
TRACY, 29
Where are you from?
I was born in Halifax and grew up on Vancouver Island.
Tell us about your personal style!
My style is mostly casual, it changes and from day to day, depending on my mood ~ sometimes feminine/vintage, sometimes eclectic/quirky, sometimes a bit androgynous
What's your experience with Thrifting?
None! I’m a beginner thrifter excited to learn more about it!
5. One article of clothing in your wardrobe you cannot live without?
Olive green lace up boots circa the 1980s I bought online
Where do you like to shop in Vancouver?
Right now, I mostly stick to popular stores: Zara, Below the Belt, Aritzia
And there are some fantastic local boutiques in my hometown of Victoria, BC I love to shop at: Flavour, Paradise, Oxford, Street, Still Life, Suasion, and Amelia Lee. Since moving to Vancouver, I have yet to find my new favourite places to shop so I’m looking forward to beginning this thrifting journey!
Why do you thrift shop?
I’m looking to get into thrift-shopping for a new experience and because I like having an eclectic style — I try to stay away from trends, and I believe thrift shopping will be a great way to find unique items and continue developing a personal style that’s all my own
